While Austin is much more than a college town, the greater Austin area is home to an abundance of higher education institutions both large and small. UT Austin, the hub of the University of Texas network, is a leader in higher education and boasts more than 50,000 enrolled students. Texas State University, located just a short drive south on Interstate-35 in San Marcos, enrolls more than 25,000 students.
The greater Austin area is also home to smaller, private institutions, such as Huston-Tillotson University and Southwestern University, both affiliated with the United Methodist Church, and St. Edward’s University, a Catholic liberal arts college. Austin Community College has eight campuses in the greater Austin area, making the school one of the largest community colleges in the nation. Large or small, public or private, four year or two year, the greater Austin area affords prospective students an array of options for higher education institutions.
