Housing Permits by MetroWhile Austin ranks as the 35th largest metro based on population size in  2012, it issued more housing permits than all but four metros (Houston, Dallas,  New York and Washington). In 2013-to-date, Austin ranks 8th for total permits issued.

Before the Housing Boom, Texas accounted for about 9% of total housing permits  in the U.S., just a bit ahead of the 7-8% of the U.S. population that the state  accounts for. Over the last decade, Texas’ share of U.S. permits was 12%, and  for 2013-to-date, it is 15%. Austin, which currently represents 0.6% of the  U.S. population, accounted for about 1% of U.S. permits before the housing  boom, but garnered 2.4% in 2012 and 2.2% in 2013-to-date. Austin is also taking  an outsize share of Texas permits as well. While Austin is presently 8% of the  state population, it issued 15% of the state’s permits thus far in 2013, a  larger share than any year except 2000.
