Austin Tops the list of the best performing cities this year is Austin, Texas, which earned the No. 1 spot with its booming tech sector. The Milken Institute recently released its Best-Performing Cities 2013 report, and the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area ranks No. 1 among 200 large American cities.
The report focuses on job growth, wages and salaries, along with GDP being created and sustained, the California-based nonprofit think tank said. Many of the top metros have booming technology or energy sectors.
“A rising technology center that is home to a University of Texas campus,” reads the report. “It is creating high-quality employment that improves the region’s overall wage structure. Economic development officials tout its business-friendly, low-tax, low-regulation climate when recruiting outside the state.”
Meanwhile, Houston was ranked eighth, and Dallas takes the seven spot. Seven Texas cities cracked the top 25, including San Antonio (12), Fort Worth (16), Corpus Christi (17) and Laredo (22).
