The Austin Chamber of Commerce announced that athenahealth, Inc. has chosen to expand its software development operations in Austin, Texas, creating over 600 jobs. Founded in 1997, athenahealth is a leading provider of cloud-based health information technologyservices for electronic health records (EHR), practice management, and care coordination. The new 110,000 square-foot facility will be located at the Seaholm Power Plant redevelopment project in downtown Austin, with a total capital investment of $13 million. The company plans to hire 607 employees over the next ten years, in addition to absorbing its existing 36 Austin employees into the new space.

The Austin Chamber of Commerce assisted the company in navigating through the incentive process, providing tours and introductions to the business and life sciences communities, and today, the City of Austin approved an incentive estimated at $679 thousand over 10 years, based on $250 per job per year.

 

Earlier this month, the State of Texas announced athenahealth’s selection for a $5 million Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) grant. Software, computer systems design, and related services is a sector that employs over 25,000 in Austin and that has seen local job growth of 15% in the last year.

 

At least 15 companies in Austin employ over 1,200 in developing software for healthcare providers, including The Advisory Board Company, e-MDs, Kinnser Software, Lumeris, and NextGen Healthcare Information Systems.
