In the past couple of years, breweries have taken center stage in Austin, with local breweries and beer houses popping up all over the city. But recently, another newcomer has been stealing the spotlight. Cider. That’s right. Hard Apple Cider. Here are some of the best local Ciders to try and breweries to visit.
By J. Ryan Wheeler
Proudly brewed right here in ATX, Austin EastCider has been extremely popular. They use Washington Bittersweet apples to create “bittersharp and bittersweet” taste consistent with early prohibition ciders, according to their website. Their ciders also come in a variety of flavors including Original Dry Cider, Honey Cider, and Hopped Cider. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the newest Pineapple Cider! These brews are best enjoyed with a group of friends, under the hot Texas sun, at Zilker Park or on Lake Travis.

Owned by veterans in South Austin, they describe their cider as sinfully delicious. Head over and see for yourself! They use a “beer minded method of brewing” that gives them a distinct style and innovative flavors. Some the specialties they offer include:
- Smashed Lime Cider- Crisp Hard Cider with a touch of Texas Lime
- She’ll be Apples Cider- An Apple Cider, Easy to Drink, not too dry and not too sweet
- Ruby Crush Cider- A Ruby Red Grapefruit/Apple Hard Cider
- Hefe Apfel Cider- An Unfiltered German Style Apple/Orange Hard Cider
A little adventurous for those in the mood to explore!

A little way off the beaten path, Texas Keep Cider is worth the visit. They offer a selection of 8 specialty ciders, as well as selections of wine and mead. Visitors can hangout in the taproom while they enjoy and taste various drinks. Kiddos and pups are also welcome to enjoy snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.

Argus Cidery offers a wide selection of ciders to taste and enjoy. They also offer a unique…well…ciderkin? Argus Fermentables Ciderkin, to be exact. What is you ask? We’re not entirely sure, but Argus Cidery promises a “dry apple palate with a tart bite, finishing clean and bright.” Sounds pretty exciting. Head over to the tasting room and try it! Try the cider flights, cider by the glass and bottles, or purchase some to take home and enjoy later.
